West Yellowstone
Another day in front of the computer and I still haven’t gotten around to updating here. Spent today in West Yellowstone writing another article for the Indie Travel Podcast Website, (I’ll put a link up when it goes live), and getting some other things done on the web. Not very exciting to read about, I’m afraid.
But Yellowstone has been awesome. As my article will describe I’ve been completely taken by the geyser area. Been spending the last 5 days exploring the area, watching geysers, and (the most fun of all), waiting for the geysers to erupt while talking to the people around me and working on sewing a bunch of tatting on to my skirt. I’m almost done with the skirt and will post pictures when I do finish it. I figured it out the other day and I think there’ll be about 70 hours into it when I’m done.
I’m rather enjoying working on the absurdly large and tedious projects. I have plans to start two tablecloths soon one of which will be at least a hundred hours and the other a couple hundred.
But here I am rambling on about tatting and you’re more curious about the travel. Unfortunately as much fun as I’m having here in Yellowstone it’s not the sort of fun that really translates to the (web)page. Mostly a lot of sitting around waiting for geysers to erupt. What’s made it fun is all the great people I’ve met from all over the country (and world, got to practice my Japanese the other night). Been getting lots of suggestions for places to check out while I’m traveling as well, and hopefully those people will come and leave comments here, because of course, I haven’t been writing them down and have probably forgotten a bunch already.

Become a geyser groupie, have you? It hits the best of us. Just prepare to smell sulphur on your clothes and in your car long after you leave :) And please, more about tatting. Mimi, your tatting friend (who witnessed your thread indulgence in Spokane…)

Glad things are going well! Never made it to Yellowstone, but always a possibility before the end of the year.

Hi Mimi,
Since you were there when I bought it you know the thread I’m thinking of making a tablecloth out of. Yes, I am crazy enough to be considering a tablecloth out of size 80. The other would be out of the nylon thread I think I showed you. Much, much larger. After looking at your silk piece I think it should hang very well when it’s done.
You sound like you’ve been a geyser groupie at once before yourself. Anything to give us an excuse to sit and tat, huh? :)

I’ll tat or knit just about anywhere. Just got back from Volcanoes NP and I knitted by Halema’uma’u crater while my husband (also a volcano groupie) stared and hoped something interesting would happen besides just steaming :) I tatted at Yellowstone while he watched geysers (looking up at important times!) Size 80 for a tablecloth will be beautiful… just will take a little longer to make is all. I have actually seen one made of tiny round motifs of 8 rings/chains (2 chains joining to each of the 4 motifs at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock to it) and she did little 4-ring roses in the holes between. That’s a lot of ends! So actually personally I’d do the cotton before the nylon unless you’ve found a good way to tie off the nylon?

I’m going to have two months in Hawaii at the end of this year. I’m really looking forward to them though I have no idea yet where I’m going to go or see. Suggestions are greatly appreciated! I know I’ll definitely spend some time checking out the volcanoes.
I’ve finally figured out a way to make u-turns on an edging pattern I like for the nylon tablecloth. So the whole thing can be done as a “continuous” piece. Haven’t started yet on figuring out how to tie off the ends yet, but I wound it up and found I can fit an entire ball onto my Tatsy shuttle so theoretically I’ve only got two ends for each ball, 46 ends all together. It’s comforting to know it’ll ONLY be be 46.
As for the size 80 cotton tablecloth, I know the pattern I want to use (the same one as on the skirt, actually) but still haven’t figured out a nice way to make the u-turns.
I’m thinking this is the project I’ll take with me to Hawaii, so I might end up wanting to do it as separate strips (to make it easier to carry around) and then I’ll need to figure out a good way to put them all together afterwards.
Anyway, at some point soon (soon=next couple months) there will be a tatting page added to the website. And pictures of the skirt as soon as I remember to take them!

Nice to see the completed skirt you were working on in Yellowstone. Enjoyed chatting with you and learning about tatting. Come visit West Virginia some time. You will love the mountains in the fall!

Thanks for leaving a comment. One of the things I love most about tatting is that people always ask me about it and then we start talking about other things.
I may make it out to West Virgina sometime next year. It’s all still very much in the year.
